This seems  the best way.
The database cannot contain data which is not in the original.
This does not exclude "virtual" references such as "Gradule 1908 - \i notation", but "1908 - Vatican - Graduale Romanum' should keep the "Joseph" of "Populus Sion"
\j and \ae is a good solution which respects the original.
