I haven't used umlauts, but I often use accented characters, and they
look fine. Instead of coding them in LaTeX notation, I just include them
in the input file (the GABC file), either by typing a key combination or
by using my computer's "special characters" utility.

The umlaut-characters for German, for example, would be: äöüÄÖÜ (feel
free to copy and paste these :-) )
