I've been doing that booklet for some time now and I do not recall all the
issues I've had over the years. As best I can recall, I had troubles with
parcolumns, in particular with the rule color. parcolumns would cause the rule
to have the same color as the text. Now that may not seem like a problem, but
when I have red rubrics in the booklet, the rule was red. It was little things
like that as to why I went with pdfcolparcolumns.
I also used letrine. And yes, one may need to tweak the height a bit, but that
is what the Latex \newcommand is for.
