The [1] tells LaTeX that the command you're defining has one argument. It is identified by #1 in the stuff that follows. I'll admit that the way the styles are currently modified is very user unfriendly. I'm working on changing that, but said change is not ready for the 3.0 release we're hoping to make at the end of the month.
