Dear all,

I'm thinking about the debate that took place two years ago here:

https://mail.gna.org/public/gregorio-users/2013-05/threads.html

in the "GregoBase... getting a bit further..." thread.

The global debate is ae vs æ vs ǽ, i vs js, etc.

I just had an idea I'd like to submit you: in Gregorio, everything that
is noted with <sp> could be more configurable. In GregoBase, everything
could be identical to the original, but surrounded by <sp>.

For instance in http://gregobase.selapa.net/chant.php?id=1916 , the
fifth syllable would be <sp>ae</sp>, which is the same as the original.
Then to integrate the score inside a books using æ, one would just have
to define

\greusespecial{ae}{æ}

and all ae would be transformed into æ. The advantage of this is mainly
for i vs j: only the <sp>i</sp> could be transformed to j, not all i.

This changes the meaning of <sp> heavily, but it would also be possible
to add a new markup like <alt>, that could handle <sp> inside it. For
instance <alt><sp>ae</sp></alt> would be equivalent to <alt>æ</alt>.

Also, I think providing a few macros to "deaccentize" words in pure TeX
would be quite easy, so I don't think accents should use <alt>.

What do you think of the idea? This is just a brainstorming... But
please don't make it an argument of ae vs æ or i vs j, that's not the point.

Thank you,

Elie
