Br. Samuel will correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is:

The old \grefactor is now divided into two related concepts:
\greconffactor (for use in spacing configurations like gsp-default.tex)
and \grechangestaffsize (which changes the "factor" in the main tex
document between scores).

\greconffactor in gsp-default.tex establishes a value that all the
scalable dimensions (i.e., where the third argument is scalable) below
it will scale against when \grechangestaffsize is used to change the
staff size in your tex file.

This is necessary to make it possible to use "absolute" (e.g, cm and pt)
and "relative" (e.g., em and ex) sizes when defining dimensions, and
those calculations will be based on \greconffactor.
