There was some corruption in the text part of the data file.  I'm 
putting a corrected version at

http://www.ecn.wfu.edu/~cottrell/misc/ESYE_TABLE_07MAR07.gdt

For future reference: hopefully corruption of gretl data files is 
not something that happens very often, but these files are just 
gzipped XML.  You can copy a file foo.gdt to foo.txt.gz, then run 
gunzip on the latter to get foo.txt, an XML file.  You can then 
open foo.txt in a text editor and see what's wrong.  If it's 
fixable, then copy the fixed file to foo.gdt and open it in gretl.
(gretl data files don't have to be gzipped.)
