I'll second that. The rel tag should only be used if you aren't using any other libraries. Really, onclick is the best method for greybox, the author should cover that more in his docs.
If you're finding it extremely difficult to use, I suspect that you don't code by hand but use dreamweaver or visual studio or someaught. This tool is aimed at hands on developers and at amateurs doing very simple websites (they're the ones using rel). I've been using greybox for a couple years, and it performs very well for me; it's a very simple chunk of code.
