Try using a strict doctype instead of transitional. Compatability mode in IE8 is a switch telling the browser to process the web page using previous version's engine instead of the new one.
Why are you worried about this when IE8 hasn't even been finalized yet? They are still on RC1. It may be a tempest in a teapot after they fix more bugs. Good luck!
