Are these the exact commands you entered? No wonder they didn't work,
you'd have to specify a window-manager (e.g. wm-ng, fluxbox)

What error message do you get. It's quite hard to guess why it doesn't
work without a decent error message (or if there is none, a comment
specifying this fact).

It surely is. I'm running it here with the radeon driver without any
problems.
