play blah.wav > /dev/null I use esdplay (Debian Sarge) and it doesn't do this. I don't know if esdplay is in grml. You might also "man play" and see if it has a switch to tell it to run quietly (so to speak). -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
