Agree 100 percent.  I prefer the non-linebreaking behavior
of the current groff.  In fact, TeX *does* allow linebreaking
on hyphens between numbers, and I find it very irritating
that I have to explicitly prevent this by always mboxing
star catalogue numbers like He~2-131 (where ~ translates
to a nonbreaking space).
