My  dstat(1)  on Ubunutu 8.04 Linux puts out color escapes when the it
talks to a terminal, but is mono-chrome when invoked in a pipe line or into
a file.
        dstat  |  cat -
        dstat  >dstat.out

Similarly for  ls --color=auto .
