Yes, pick one of the allowed ones.
$ cat -A jerome

.ec ^@$
foo^@fBbar^@fPxyzzy$
.ec ^B$
foo^BfBbar^BfPxyzzy$
.ec ^[$
foo^[fBbar^[fPxyzzy$
$ nroff jerome | grep .
foobarxyzzy foofBbarfPxyzzy foobarxyzzy foofBbarfPxyzzy
$
