I came from TeX, and luckily groff then had strings with arguments
already!

is \*[I almost] as easy (especially with US keyboard) as
\def\it{\edef\@font@currIsBold{\FALSE}\@font@setFont{it}}%
\def\tit#1{{\it#1\/}}
the \tit{version} of \TeX. Almost as clean.
