Likewise for neatroff (https://github.com/aligrudi/neatroff_make).
I am not sure how it compares feature-wise to Heirloom troff,
but I must say that the clarity and organization of its source
code is clearly superior.

It's a pity neither of those two projects come with sufficient
documentation.
