Looks like I could have put this change in for groff > 1.23.0, which bumped our Texinfo dependency from 4.8 to 5.0.
Menus are also generated automatically now (I don't recall since when) if they are not present, and since Texinfo 7.1 (18 October 2023), there is @nodedescription, which allows to have menus with descriptions automatically generated. My wild guess is that there are descriptions in menus in groff, so this is probably a requirement for automatic menus for you. Now, if you bumped to 5.0 in 2020, it is probably a bit too early to bump to 7.1, but in the future it could become relevant. -- Pat
