I don't see why these macros packages using the technique warrants de-documenting it in the manual. A reader looking for a way to accomplish an nroff task should expect to find info about it in the manual, rather than also being expected to trawl macro packages to find existing implementations of that task. The excised footnote was light on details, but it did point readers to where they could learn more. Now only the .em method is mentioned, and it's not always the most suitable.
