A confounding factor is that it's common for paragraphing macros to say something like ".ne 2v" unconditionally to avoid stranding the first line of a paragraph. However that's suboptimal if the paragraph requires only one vee. I think some *roff tutorials coach writers of paragraphing macros to adopt this pattern, as if "widows and orphans hate this one simple trick". 'Tain't that simple. Paragraph lengths come in too many varieties for such a crude instrument to always produce good results. Regards, Branden
