It may be helpful to indicate what linux distribution you are using.

It may be helpful to also look at the user  guide:
http://manual.gromacs.org/documentation/current/user-guide/index.html

On the linux command line try typing 

gmx -version

Usually the binaries are on the path.

You may find it convenient to compile Gromacs yourself for efficient use of any 
GPUs you have available. Some documentation here:
