fwupd 0.7.3 adds support for flashing capsule updates not placed in the ESRT. It uses libsmbios to query the flashability of these packages. It also resolves the fwupd half of https://launchpad.net/bugs/1589585 which will fix unplugging a USB device causing gnome-software to check for software updates. Currently this bug will be blocked by a variety of other bugs: 1) MIR of libsmbios https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsmbios/+bug/1603072 If/when that MIR is resolved it will need to be made effective in xenial and development release both. If any changes are required for libsmbios, they'll need to be backported to xenial too. 2) FFe for EFI tools transition in yakkety: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fwupdate/+bug/1620698 The rest of the tools don't need to be backported to xenial, only fwupd.
