I suggest following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#New_upstream_microreleases, assuming the changes to 4.0.4 all qualify, to bring Xenial and Zesty both up to 4.0.4.

It's been several months now, and upstream has released 4.0.1. This is packaged as 4.0.1-1build1 in 16.10, 4.0.1-5 in devel, and 4.0.1-6 in sid. The Debian maintainer is quite active and disciplined. What's the best way forward to getting a newer PowerDNS in 16.04 LTS? A yakkety backport? zesty backport? Or merge from Debian?
