I'm currently cleaning out the tracking on dormant qemu/libvirt bugs.

On this one I'm still waiting for a check on newer vmware to make a
valid case for SRU (still reproducible) or consider it solved due to
other updates (in vmware in this case).

Lacking the feedback I'll consider the incomplete task timed out and mark it 
invalid.
Please take no offense and once the info that was asked is provided feel free 
to set back to new/confirmed.

Bug description:
  qemu-img create function produce VMDK image files with unsupported
  format option for an OVA file for importing a virtual machine into
  VMware vSphere/ESXi.

  
  VMDK file created by qemu-img failes during import with error message "Not a 
supported disk format (sparse VMDK version too old)"

  Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  qemu version 2.5.0 (Debian 1:2.5+dfsg-5ubuntu10.6)
