You (or someone else with access to your computer—perhaps a family
member) installed it.

Perhaps you recently installed Adium? Adium asks you on its first
launch whether you want to install Growl. It's possible that you
simply said “yes already” and didn't realize that it was asking to
install Growl.

This has nothing to do with Growl. You have screen inversion turned
on. This is part of Mac OS X.

Go to the Universal Access pane of System Preferences and switch from
“White on Black” to “Black on White”.

Is there a Growl icon in System Preferences?
