sound issue resolved, as suggested not related to growlMail: this is
off topic but...
Mail 3.x seems to mistakenly redefine mail alerts. the new mail app
has redefined its mail alerts as a user interface sound instead of
just a normal alert or sound effects. this is annoying because now one
has all these other beeps and whistles just to hear new mail arrivals.
the odd thing about it, and why i call it a mistake, is that at the
same time, the effect sound itself is no longer filtered through the
sound effect channel but has instead been moved to the normal computer
output channel which by definition makes it not in the category of a
user interface sound. the consequence of this, for instance, is that
people with hearing disabilities or others who get there emails as
screen flashes, as configured in universal access, can no longer do
so. none of this makes sense together. the universal access issue
might be the only hope that apple will be guilted or motivated to fix
this quickly.

thanks for the other stuff.

That's nothing to do with GrowlMail. Check your sound settings;
perhaps you (accidentally) or some application changed your alert
device or alert volume.

This preference isn't set by default. To restore the default, type this:

        defaults delete com.apple.mail EnableBundles

What do you mean by that?

Growl is a separate process; it doesn't affect Mail at all. That's
different from GrowlMail; as a Mail bundle, it runs inside Mail, so it
can affect Mail. (But it doesn't hook into anything that would break
sounds.)

It should have.

Same technique as above:

        defaults delete com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion
