Growl 1.1.6's automatic updater downloaded version 1.2, even though my system is Mac OS X 10.4.11 on an iBook G4. Upon attempting to installed the downloaded 1.2, the installer stated that Mac OS X 10.5 was needed for installation. Apparently, the automatic updater in Growl does not consider the existing operating system level when making it's determination as to whether an update should be automatically downloaded.
It should. If I were manually seeking and installing Growl, I would certainly be researching the product to ensure that it will install on my current operating system. The whole purpose of automatic updating, I thought, was that once the product was installed, it would determine for itself the availability of any new updates for that operating system then download/install them. If this is how automatic updating is supposed to work in Growl, it either misread my Tiger installation as Leopard or it didn't do a check to see that I had Tiger installed at all.
