Not quite what I was asking, but I got it to work in 10.5.

chris, thanks for your reply.

the workflow i want to build should do the following:
- get the files selected in finder
- act on them via a shell script
- show growl notification that script is done *for these files*.

the tricky bit for me is to get into the growl action the out put of
the precending option. for me the growl action shows only the text i
typed in its title field.

I need to know how to use automator to try to help you. Tell me the
steps you would take to make a very basic automator action.

hi there

in automator i use the growl notification action which works fine,
but i cannot pass in any title or description programmatically. any
ideas how to do this?

i'm on mac os 10.6, growl 1.2 and growl action 1.1.6 (which, i guess,
came with growl 1.2).

thanks, olli
