His suggestion was more of a way to plug any command-line tool, including a shell script, in as a display. Such a tool could run an AppleScript, but it could, in fact, do anything.
I think the idea has merit. Ultimately, it goes alongside the existing idea of providing a more generic “action” concept, of which displays (which would then only be *visual* displays) would be a subset.
