When a second Growl icon appeared in the menu bar, I followed Peter Hosey's suggestion (March 8 - "I have two Growl icons in the menu bar. How do I eliminate one of them?") and uninstalled Growl. I had to do this manually as I could not find the Uninstall Growl application (nor the Growl 1.2 disk image).
I then downloaded Growl 1.2 and installed it ... but now Growl does not appear in System Preferences.
