Mail and Growl have nothing to do with each other.

I think what you're referring to is the crash when retrieving body text. The 
workaround to that was not to disable GrowlMail (although that would also have 
worked), but to force GrowlMail to use summary mode, which was a defaults 
command or two.

With GrowlMail working, you can switch it back to your preferred summary-mode 
setting in Mail's Preferences. If you did, in fact, disable it, you can 
re-enable it in the same place. No need to go through the command line either 
way.
