See if you can find anything like GrowlTunes or GrowlHelperApp running. If so, you can kill them manually if you would like. It sounds like the prefpane is corrupted for some reason. I'm not sure why you can't run the uninstaller, but you can go into the following to remove Growl manually: Your Home Directory Library PreferencePanes You should see a Growl.prefpane from there. Move that to the trash.
