So I was recently prompted a dozen or so times to update to the new version of growl.
I did this by downloading the dmg growl pointed me to and selecting install when opening the mount. Everything seemed fine. But. I don't think the install worked properly. Or at the very least isn't clean. I suspect everybody is affected by this. Got to system preferences -> accounts -> Login Items under your main account.
