That makes sense.  Any way to trace what application might be
accessing automountd?

I found this in my google searches:

The article's topic is not entirely relevant, but it does indicate
that an automountd request can come from Time Machine.  Not
particularly useful for me since I have Time Machine off, but thought
it might answer someone else's case.
