I've had it enabled for a long time with no problem, but recently I added a skype contact who uses it on an iPhone I think.
As far as I can tell every time the iPhone looses or gains a signal I get a notification, sometimes within seconds of each other and it drove me mad so I switched off Growl for skype in the prefs. Now I seem to be getting sounds instead of the visual notifications, but can't see any separate way to switch them off - before the notifications for anything were only ever visual [except Apple Mail and Adium which had their own sound notifiactions turned on].
