having the application in your start at login preferences is equivalent to 
opening the application just after logging in, so you shouldn't have to open it 
again.
however, the application must be accessible to the system in order for it to 
open it, and based on the question mark:
did you remember to copy the HardwareGrowler.app off of the growl disk image to 
your hard drive (eg. into your Applications folder)?
you can't set an app within a disk image to run at login, because the disk 
image isn't mounted until you open it.
