Thanks Chris. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, though I double-
checked my TimeMachine backup and it appears there was only a global
copy of Growl installed (/Library/PreferencePanes) and no user copies
(~/Library/PreferencePanes). Is that what you meant by "2
installations"? Do apps like Dropbox install it in other places?

Anyway, I'll see if the notice appears again; it seems to happen every
day or so.
