Folks, I just received word that Adobe stopped shipping Growl in CS 5.5. This is good news in that we should see a reduction of the amount of people confused by Growl's presence on their systems over time. This will not rectify the problem for those people who buy CS 5 and install that. I'm not sure what else can be done on the Adobe front outside of this.
Obviously the best case would have been that Adobe had chosen to implement Growl in a way that benefits their customers, however this will at least help us with support going forward.
