People need to be able to close the notification if it's sticky. If you make it invisible, then you are actually impeding on the usability of Growl. Please don't do that. I appreciate design as much as the next person, but don't do it to sacrifice people actually being able to do something that is necessary.
Regarding changing the look, take a look at other displays out there. The one from Ryan Collins changes it a bit I believe (I could be wrong).
