First, do not delete all your prefs. Getting Growl to work typically does not require this. I'm typing this more as a warning to others who come across this thread.
On thunderbird, the problem we have is that Mozilla decided they wanted to implement a customized framework of their own, and basically ripped ours apart and then put it back together. The good part is that I can tell you that when I tried it, firefox seemed to work so it appears that if thunderbird uses the same functionality, then that will work as well.
