I am running Lion on my MBP. I had previous versions of Growl that worked fine. I used the Growl deinstaller to remove all previous versions of Growl (I'm assuming it DOES remove all previous versions!) I downloaded Growl 1.3 from the Apps store and when through the install. I am getting NO notifications for Mail.
