IMHO, menubar icon should always be optional. App preferences could easily be reached at least by following ways:
1) starting the app from application menu although it is already open. Menustrip app does that and it is really nice solution. 2) add a small coq to the growl message like Alfred does with its window. 3) App preferences could also be added to System preferences.
