Ugh, not awesome. At least you were able to dig in that far. They're probably checking for the existence of the prefpane, or could be using the udp protocol (gone, replaced by the tcp gntp protocol which is actually dependable all the time instead of the udp one that worked some of the time if you remember supporting end users on that one). Or they could be looking for GrowlHelperApp running, and not Growl. There's about 4 or 5 ways I can think of that it'd fail. For now you can run 1.2.2 but contact them about it and I bet you can get some info that'll help. Feel free to ping me on irc.
