Growl doesn't really deal with your sound at all. It may however be worth
looking into typical troubleshooting like repairing permissions. I know on
my wife's macbook pro in 10.6.x she has the airport card go missing, and a
repair permissions+restart typically resolves it. Maybe something like that
is also happening for you.
