I know (the) Growl (UI) now costs a whopping 2 bucks... I've used it for years, and it's definitely been worth that in that time, so I just look at it like I'm paying for all that time that I got to use it for free, and now I get gravy time in perpetuity.
As a professional app developer myself, let me assure you that it is a difficult, tedious, laborious, time-consuming process, and I am sure that no one on the Growl team does this for full-time work. You are, as has always been the case, free to compile the source on your own for zero dollars and zero cents, but when I look at the cost-benefit analysis, I could make that $2 quickly doing my own work, and then I would have free, auto-updating software from the Mac App Store, tied into OS X. If I continued to compile my own versions myself, which is a pain, eventually I would have spent hours compiling software just to save 2 dollars, and spent a whole lot more money in wasted productivity. As it is, this message is running long... Pay the money. Growl is obviously valuable to you, just as the time put into it is to those who work on it. My $2...
