ok, for Skype and vlc at least (try with evernote too i guess), you will need to grab a copy of Growl Version Detective from http://growl.info/downloads open it up, go to the frameworks tab, and for every app you see with an out-of-date framework, select them and click the upgrade button. when you reopen them, fingers crossed they will now work. for Skype, also be sure to go into Skype preferences->notifications and select growl there too.
