Just in case somebody else stumbles upon this: I just figured that the latest incarnation of growlnotify using the new protocol does in fact respond with exit code 2 instead of 0 if a notification is clicked. However, growlnotify has to be invoked with "- w" which will cause it to "hang" until either the notification is clicked or a hardwired 10sec timeout passed.
