funny, because it sounds like you're having issues with the app store rather than growl…
anyway. did you have a previous installation of growl (that didn't come from the app store)? if so, that may have got the app store confused. try running growl version detective (get it from here: http://growl.info/downloads) see if it picks up any old installs (on the growl tab). if so trash them. also open launchpad.app, if you find growl in there, click and hold then (x) to remove from there. finally go back to the app store, try again?
