First a few questions:
1. Did you notice that Growl is no longer a Pref Panel but a 'real'
app?
2. Do you know why or what difference that makes?
3. Do you understand that Growl only works by communicating with other
apps?
Sorry if that last question sounds like the "cop out" you referred to
but it's the truth. The old version, which you are free to continue
using, BTW, STILL needs support from the apps that communicate to it.
Growl is not 'magic'. It can only report what other apps tell it
(generally). It is not a stand-alone app that can monitor everything,
or even a majority of "everything" that is going on while your
computer (and any app) runs. It is not an app that simply uses its own
code to do whatever it is supposed to do. Frankly, apps are using more
and more of what comes built-in to the OS, anyway. Why reinvent the
"wheel" when Apple has already made one for you!? ;-)
But the fact remains, in order to get Growl in front of more people,
the Mac App Store is simply required. That forces developers to use
the hardware/software (the OS) in more confined/controlled ways. The
Growl developers thought long and hard about making this move. If you
don't agree with that decision, you are free to state that, but please
don't accuse them of making up stuff ("crap") unless you know what the
app does, how it does it and what it takes to do it.
Of course, if you ARE a coder/programmer/developer, I'm sure they
would be happy to let you do some of their testing/coding/testing/
error tracking/coding/testing/support/ad infinitum along with them. I
think they have a contact link on their site.
The fact is, any app that wants to communicate to you has two valid
means:
1. They can right their own code, including the graphics displayed and
the methods required to get the OS to allow them to pop up a window.
And do all that while STILL maintaining and developing the real
purpose of the app.
OR
2. Make use of the Growl framework and let the Growl Team do all the
work of communicating with the user of their app.
As I asked earlier, Why re-invent the "wheel"? :-)
So, Growl has changed so it can be made available to a vastly larger
user-base. Those changes require developers of any app that
communicates via Growl to edit how that is done. Period. They are
changing, but it will take time and not all developers will decide to
do the work while others may see the benefits of the more widely used
Growl. ;-)
Finally, much as I like Growl, it is not an absolute necessity.
Hopefully, you can live without it and the $2, also. I think the Growl
developers earned that piddling amount whether I like everything about
the new method of purchase or not. If you don't, just consider your $2
an early Holiday gift to the team. Have a great Holiday! 8-)
