Sounds like you may still have the Pref Panel version of Growl installed. The new version is more of a stand-alone app and you need to delete the older versions and their auxiliary files.
Go to the Growl web site <http://growl.info/downloads>, look in the "General Downloads" area and download Growl Version Detective AND Growl Uninstaller. 1. Run the Uninstaller and it should delete the older version of Growl. 2. You can then run Growl Version Detective and see if "Growl.prefpane" shows up. It shouldn't, but if it does, you can 'trash' it from there. 3. Now, click the "Framework" tab in "Growl Version Detective" and let it look through your apps that might support Growl. I think the "Framework" column should have "1.3" as the appropriate version to support use by the new version of Growl. At any rate, you can update the Framework version by clicking the "Update FW" button. This should eliminate the recurring "Update available" messages that are probably caused by the old version of Growl being on your computer. Hope that helps!
