Try deleting Growl from your account's login items in System Preferences (and any other instances of Growl or GrowlHelperApp that might be in there), and then toggling the switch in Growl.
The other style you see is Mist, a built into the framework style that applications (and plugins like GrowlMail) can use if Growl is not running or reachable. The rollup thing sounds like a crash in the rollup, and (most likely) unrelated to the login items issue. If you see the rollup thing again, it would be helpful if you could send us a crash log.
